Picture of the month September 2009

Picture taken at Steenokkerzeel on August 25 2009 at 0346 CET.

The airport of Brussels with parked aircraft and some significant lightning behind gives always some very nice pictures. It is rather seldom that all ingredients are right aligned to capture these kind of shots. In October 2004, it did also occur: point of view was on the opposite of the airport, check image.

In this case a rather small cell developed over the southwest of province Hainaut, it lasted for about 1 hour on its movement to the northeast. A couple cloud-to-ground discharges took place southwest of the city Brussels, before this shower completely collapsed. The angle was right to get both airport terminals (or piers), including more than a dozen aircraft parked near the fingers, with at a distance of approx 25 km the impact of a quadruple discharge.
