Picture of the month November 2009

Picture taken at Kampenhout on October 28 2009 at 2226 CET.

When cirriform cloudiness is present, bright spots may appear little outside the small halo of 22° of the Sun or Moon. During the day referred as Sun Dogs, but during the night time obviously as Moon Dogs, they are usually seen when the moon is low, appearing 22° to the left or right at the same height of the Moon. Much fainter than a Sun Dog, visually they seem often colorless. But when making a long exposed picture, the same colors as a Sun Dog appear: red colored towards the Moon, sometimes green or blue beyond.

This picture was taken when a near full Moon was slowly descending in the very transparent sky. Slightly overexposed, it shows a rather bright Moon Dog on the right which sometimes appeared when thick Cirrus (due to contrails) passed in the right angle.
