Picture of the month January 2010

Picture taken at Kampenhout on January 4, 2010.

The winter season 2009-2010 seems promising concerning snow and ice. After a brief wintry spell with loads of snow in December 2009 (check the weather reports of Dec. 17 and Dec. 20), the classic thaw of Christmas and the days afterwards did occur once more. But from New Years day on, the weather charts turned again wintry. In Flanders light snowfall did occur at large scale on January 3. Also the next day - evening, some flurries could be counted and on this particular evening tried once more to capture one of them in the dark on my cams sensor with flashlight. With an air temperature of -2C, this picture shows a magnified snowflake just before touchdown against the snow cover as unsharp background, accentuating the effect of depth perception.

For more info about formation of snowflakes, you're kindly referred to the MWP of March 2005
