Picture of the month March 2011

Picture taken at Kampenhout on March 2, 2011 at 19:49 and 19:50 local time.

Space Shuttle Discovery was launched on February 28 2011 for its final mission STS-133 to transport several items for the ISS and returned to Earth on March 9 2011. Afterwards it will rest at the Smithsonian museum in Washington. In 2011 Endeavour (May) and Atlantis (July) will be launched to provide ISS more necessary parts before their definitive phase out, thus ending all shuttle missions (135 in total).

In this composition 2x ISS (International Space Station) with Space Shuttle "Discovery" docked on passing Belgium at a height of 353 km. Left frame was taken when arriving from the west, right frame when on the eastern horizon and moving further away. In left frame the Shuttle is recognizable from the back (in black and grey), in right frame it has turned white and seen from the bottom (while ISS turned upside down).
