Picture of the month May 2011

Picture taken at Steenokkerzeel 19 minutes after the sunrises of April 15 and April 18 2011.

Our sun rotates on her axis with a certain speed. It quite difficult to calculate it as its composed of a gaseous plasma sending out very bright light. However it can be measured when sunspot are visible. They are darker areas with lower temperatures which change rather slow in dimensions. Via this way it could be estimated that one rotation cycle lasts roughly 25 days.

Seen from the Northern hemisphere on Earth, the spots moves from left to right. This can be clearly seen on the composition picture of two sunrises with the right one taken three day later. And of course, couldn't resist capturing airplanes flying in front of it, two times an arriving Airbus A330 of Indian carrier Jet Airways.
