Picture of the month October 2011

Picture taken at Steenokkerzeel on September 3, 2011 at 2346 local time.

Summer 2011 in Belgium turned out to be rather active concerning thundery outbreaks with half a dozen significant cases: see weather reports. Three of them were mainly during the night and the scenery of Brussels Airport has my preference to do some experiments with the camera. Of course a bit luck is needed to catch some near-by discharges. In this slightly overexposed shot, a lightning strike seems to hit a building at the far end of the airport. Investigation via the SAFIR system gave no evidence with at that time the closest impact detected at 9 km (resolution of +/- 2 km) from the cams point of view, namely somewhere over Laken (Brussels). But a closer inspection of the picture in full resolution showed that the impact was much closer, something that the first glimpse of this shot would also suggest.
